New Zealand isn’t alone in looking at the future for its air navigation system. As technology advances and operating environments change, countries are looking at adaptation and innovation to make sure their systems recover from COVID-19, remain safe and future-fit.

The focus of these programmes are similar to the direction the Terms of Reference(external link) have signalled:

• A national interest approach: establishing what the system must deliver
• System leadership and stewardship
• System security and resilience
• Financial sustainability and long-term investment planning
• Environmental sustainability: the drive to decarbonise aviation
• Unlocking benefits of new technologies and innovative practices while maintaining safety.

Some examples of international air navigation and aviation system strategies and policy statements are:

• United Kingdom
  • Flightpath to the Future(external link) (May 2022) a strategic framework for the aviation sector, setting out a ten point plan over a ten year timeframe.
  • NATS Safety Strategy for 2030: the future of safety in ATM(external link) NATS is the UK’s largest air navigation service provider. The strategy reflects rapid changes and evolving challenges in its operating environment.
• Australia
  • The National Emerging Aviation Technologies (NEAT) Policy Statement(external link) (2021) sets out how Government will support adoption of new and emerging technologies.
  • The Australian Airspace Policy Statement(external link) (2021) sets out the government policy objectives for aviation, and is reviewed every three years. Development of the latest Statement was informed by the National Strategic Airspace: National Aviation Policy Issues Paper(external link) (2021)
